My fellow SAHRDC interns

We all traveled to a foreign country half way around the world alone and found each other. I have made some great friends here! Katie is my roommate. She’s from the University of Georgia, grew up outside Atlanta, but is not what us west-coasters would characterize as “southern.” Neither is Lisa – who grew up in Alabama and is now at Boston College law. The Road to SAHRDC

http://davidsgallivanting.blogspot.in/2008/06/road-to-sahrdc.html

What is SAHRDC you may ask? It is the South Asian Human Rights Documentation Centre, and that is where I work. This last week has felt very long, and yet as if it flew by. We got a bunch of new interns. We now have about a dozen. Adam (from Oxford), Dan (my flatmate from Australia), Jolee, Monique (also from Australia), Jessi, Mariyam, Adrianna, Nadia, Curry, and Lilly. Adam, Monique, Jolee, and Jessi arrived before me, and the rest around the same time or after. We have done so much!

Impact of War on Terrorism on the Human Rights Situation in South Asia

South Asian countries, which have traditionally adopted harsh measures to silence political dissent did not lose the opportunity provided by the post-September 11 scenario and joined the bandwagon of combating terrorism and legitimising some of their activities, which in the first place breed terrorism and violence. The measures taken by the governments of the South Asian region indicates a gradual erosion of civil liberties and the rule of law across the region.

This paper (presented by Ravi Nair to the South Asia Civil Society Consultation organised by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Kathmandu, Nepal, 16 – 19 January 2003) does a brief survey of the anti-terrorism measures taken by the governments of the South Asian countries and explains the issue of due process of law in anti-terror measures taken at the international level.
